Let me be a nerd for a moment and give you some actual definitions of teamwork.
Teamwork is the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. Another definition is cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause. Ok enough of that!
As a company, we strive to educate our employees and give them the best benefits that we can. Sometimes we fall short with all the hustle and bustle of the clinic and the bottom dollar! What we have learned from going to conferences and reading continuing education information is that one of the best things that a company can do for its staff is team building. If you don’t have a strong team how can you have a strong clinic?
*YOU WILL ONLY BE AS STRONG AS YOUR “WEAKEST” LINK.*
This past month we decided to start having team building days. We didn’t know what that would entail and how much work would be involved but we dove in head first. Let me tell you it was a success! We did have some people that were Debbie Downers and didn’t want to participate at first. Who would not want to participate? The staff was allowed to play games, on the clock and eat pizza that was paid for! Also, the winning team was awarded a free spa day the next Friday afternoon! Yet we still were met with reluctance by some.
So our teamwork day arrived, we had picked out the teams based on skill and knowledge so that it would be fair and so that people would be with unfamiliar people (not that our office is big enough to have truly unfamiliar people but you get the point) and the games started. The day turned out to be a blast and we found that people got along and they actually worked as TEAMS! Oh and the Debbie Downers that didn’t want to participate….they WON and they had a BLAST! Our games were all about the foot and our policy, so we also learned a lot and refreshed things they were perhaps rusty on.
Bottom line… Teamwork is a must or you can’t function and even if you have people that are reluctant they will come around, especially if made fun. Remember your company is only as good your weakest link so make your weakest link strong and have a good knowledgeable team that loves their jobs and appreciates each other. Your team is the face that represents the company in and out of the office and you want that to be a positive representation.
